The Spanish photographer Samuel Aranda won the World Press Photo 2011, the world’s largest photojournalism contest, by the image of a veiled womanholding her arms around one wounded family after a demonstration in Yemen.
This is the first time a Spanish win this award since 1981, PerezcuandoManuel Antonio Tejero Barriopedro photographed in the coup attemptof 23-F.
The photograph, published on October 15, was taken at a mosque in Sanaa, Yemen, which was being used as field hospital dsepués that opponents of President Saleh clashed with government forces.
Jurors believe that the image does portray all aspects of the uprisings in 2011known as “Arab Spring”. “It shows a touching moment, compassionate, human consequence of a great event that is still ongoing,” the president said AidanSullivan.
