A recent study in “Nature Geoscience” suggests that the chamber of molten rock beneath the volcano of Santorini (Greece) expanded from 10 to 20 million cubic meters between January 2011 and April 2012. This growth of the “balloon” of magma has done to raise the surface of the island between 8 and 14 inches during this time, according to researchers at the University of Oxford.
The results come from an expedition funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (Environment Research), who used satellite images and radar receivers delSistema Global Positioning (GPS, for its acronym in English) that can detect movements just few millimeters of the surface.
The findings are helping scientists study the inner workings of the volcano, which last erupted scale 3600 years ago, the islands of Santorini buried under meters of pumice, according to the press release as quoted by Europa Press.
